Photometric Stereo

Synopsis

Photometric Stereo is a common method to acquire the shape of objects. We seek to extend the technique to non-Lambertian Reflectance, use differential methods to develop a new framework, and unify photometric stereo with shape from shading and structure from motion within the differential framework.

Details

Photometric Stereo is a common method to acquire the normals and shape of an object by using multiple lighting directions. It is a commonly used technique for surface reconstruction. However, the existing theory largely works only of unshadowed Lambertian surfaces. We seek to extend this theory to shadows and non-Lambertian reflectance. We have also recently developed a novel framework of differential methods for shape recovery in non-Lambertian scenes. We seek to unify differential photometric stereo with other methods in shape from shading and optical flow.
